Product Description

Piperine is a broad-spectrum anticonvulsant with the chemical formula C17H19NO3. Colorless monoclinic prism crystals, odorless, with burning sensation after taste. Neutral to litmus reagent. Soluble in chloroform, ethanol, ether, soluble in benzene and acetic acid, almost insoluble in water and petroleum ether. It can be extracted from the dried near-ripe or ripe fruit of pepper, a plant in the family Piperaceae. It has a good antagonism effect on experimental electric convulsions in mice, and is effective against convulsions and audiogenic seizures caused by pentylenetetrazol, picrotoxin and intraventricular injection tubes of curine and glutamic acid. There are varying degrees of resistance. It is also effective for certain types of epilepsy. Piperine is more toxic to flies than pyrethrum.
