Product Description

7-Dehydrocholesterol is a sterol substance found in the sebaceous glands and their secretions in animal skin. 7-Dehydrocholesterol is a precursor of cholesterol synthesis and an intermediate product of vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol) synthesis. It will open the ring and be converted into vitamin D3 under light. It is an off-white crystalline powder or light yellow crystalline powder.


1.7-Dehydrocholesterol is the biosynthetic precursor of cholesterol. It helps produce vitamin D3 when exposed to ultraviolet B (UVB) radiation. 7-dehydrocholesterol has been used as an internal standard for the determination of sterols.
2.7-Dehydrocholesterol is used to diagnose Smith-Lemli-Opitz syndrome. Infants with Smith-Lemli-Opitz (SLO) syndrome have reduced cholesterol levels in the blood and tissues and greatly increased concentrations of 7-dehydrocholesterol and its isomer 8-dehydrocholesterol.
