Levulinic acid is an organic compound with the molecular formula C5H8O3. Easily soluble in water and some organic solvents. It hardly decomposes under normal pressure distillation. If heated for a long time, it will lose water and generate unsaturated γ-lactone.
1. Levulinic acid helps in the formation of bones and maintains normal excitability of nerves and muscles.
2. Bisphenolic acid produced from levulinic acid can be used to produce water-soluble resin, which is used in the paper industry to produce filter paper.
3. In the pharmaceutical industry, levulinic acid's calcium salt (calcium fructobiate) can be used to prepare intravenous injections.
