Inositol In theory, there are 9 possible isomers, such as myo-inositol, epi-inositol, scyllo-inositol, etc. Almost all living things contain free or bound inositol. It exists in the form of hexaphosphate as inositol hexaphosphate in nucleated red blood cells of plants and birds. Compounds with fewer phosphate groups than this compound are also distributed in plants and animals. In addition, free inositol mainly exists in muscle, heart, lung, and liver, and is a component of phosphatidylinositol in phospholipids.
Myo-inositol is an essential nutrient source for birds and mammals, lack of myo-inositol, for example, can cause hair loss in mice, and abnormalities around the eyes in rats. Rats can metabolize inositol in large quantities, but the excretion in urine is not much. Sharks seem to be able to convert inositol into a substance that stores energy.
