Vitamin B12, abbreviated as VB12, also known as cobalamin, is one of the B vitamins. It is a kind of complex
organic compound of Gulin containing cobalt. The trivalent cobalt contained in it is located in the center of
the plane of Gulin ring similar to porphyrin. It is the largest and most complex vitamin molecule found at
present, and it is also the only vitamin containing metal ions; Its crystal is red, so it is also called red vitamin.
Plants do not contain VB12 and cannot make VB12. Liver is the best source of VB12, followed by milk, meat,
eggs, fish and so on. VB12 is an essential coenzyme in the synthesis of ribonucleic acid and deoxyribonucleic
acid. The lack of VB12 in vivo can cause pathological changes of nervous system such as peripheral nerve
and central encephalopathy.

1. Improve the utilization rate of folic acid
In the process of synthesizing methionine (synthesized from homocysteine) and choline together with folic
acid to produce purine and pyrimidine, cyanocobalamine is synthesized, and the precursor substances
such as methylcobalamine and coenzyme B12 are involved in the methylation process of many important
compounds. When vitamin B12 is deficient, the activity of transferring methyl groups from methyltetrahydrofolate
decreases, making folic acid an unusable form, leading to folic acid deficiency.
2. Maintain the metabolism and function of nerve myelin sheath.
Lack of vitamin B12 can cause neurological disorders, spinal cord degeneration and serious mental symptoms.
Vitamin B12 deficiency can lead to peripheral neuritis. The early manifestations of vitamin B12 deficiency in
children are abnormal mood, dull expression, slow response, and finally lead to anemia.
3. Promote the development and maturation of red blood cells.
Methylmalonyl coenzyme A is converted into succinyl coenzyme A, which is involved in the tricarboxylic
acid cycle. Succinyl coenzyme A is related to the synthesis of heme.
4. Vitamin B12 also participates in the synthesis of deoxynucleic acid (DNA), the metabolism of fat,
carbohydrate and protein, and increases the synthesis of nucleic acid and protein.
